You might have been wondering what's been going on with the forums lately. I know I have.
Here's the skinny: the server that runs the forums, my email, and a whole load of other Really Important Stuff shit the bed over the weekend. There are two schools of thought: a) don't put all your eggs in one basket, and b) put all your eggs in one basket and watch that basket!! I took the latter and watched as the Easter Bunny hopped all over it, crapped in it, and set it on fire before going on a bender with the Tooth Fairy. Damn rabbit.
The upside is that no data was lost and I was able to move the drive to a new machine and bring it back to life this afternoon.
The downside is that I had to sacrifice my normal desktop machine to do it. And I still don't know what's wrong with the first server (hence the Easter Bunny reference.) And I'm not done building the Ub3r L33t R3pL4c3M3n7 53rV3r (n0w w17h 4MD64 + R41D1 S4t4 dR1v35! w00t! t3h 5ux0r! pr0n!)
I'm out a weekend, 3 computers (I kinda broke another one while sorting this out), $700, and a bunch of sanity but for the time being, the system is working.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that things look good but are still not completely stable so if anything bad happens, it's because the Easter Bunny is a mean drunk.
The Easter Bunny is a Mean Drunk (server problems)
Everything else, basically.

If people want to contribute to the bandwidth fund, that's cool but totally optional, The other stuff that runs on the machine actually pay for it (I'm running mail for a 50-person oil company back in N'Awlins -- long story.)arthursimone wrote:is there any way we can all chip in to help defer bob's personal expenses?
I just wanted to explain why the forums have been kinda flaky for the past week or so.
FWIW, my current theory (besides the Easter Bunny) is that it's either the power supply or the motherboard because it finds all the drives but won't boot from CD.
