Help with new site, ie domain reg. and hosting
normally i've got a guy who takes care of all this stuff for me but he went insane, so i need help with registering a domain name and finding a place to host a new site for my booking agency. the domain i want is available and in the past i've used network solutions for that and i think pair.com for hosting.
does anyone have any other options that might be better than feeding these monsters?
i'm also unsure of how much room i need MB wise. i have two other sites that i run; beardedlamb and availablecupholders. both are pretty big but i have no idea how big.
much pershiated.

Use GoDaddy for domain name registration. They're cheap, easy to use, and not as draconian as Network Solutions when it comes to clinging to domain names.
For hosting, I use page-zone.com. They're really good, but I know a lot of people who swear by dreamhost. Dreamhost also has crazy price promotions all the time. Both of them offer a lot of MB, bandwidth and features for the prices they charge.

I've always used IX Web Hosting.
www.ixwebhosting.com
They offer a lot of space and transfer for a very low price, and they also give you FREE domain name registrations. Plus, they have the highest-rated customer service of almost any web provider.
I love them.

Dreamhost. DIRT cheap (and reliable) hosting. Use the promotional code 777 and it's even cheaper. I host the official sites for Chuck Palahniuk, Craig Clevenger and Will Christopher Baer with them.
I use GKG.net to register domain names, though Dreamhost includes 1 domain reg with a new hosting account.
Oh yeah, and if you use em, put down "kbadr" as the referrer.

holy christ.
i got a buttload of space, a gaggle of new email addresses, a free domain, and extremely cheap hosting for two years at dreamhost.
that promo code saved me $80.
this sounds like an ad but it's ALL true.
looks like i owe kareem a piece of cheesecake in a romantic restaurant, just the two of us. or maybe i should buy you $80 worth of cheesecakes from HEB and watch you eat them all in one sitting.
either way, thanks a bunch.
i love cheap things because i'm cheap.
who wants an email address?

Jeremy, if you forgot to use me as a referrer, you can still go in and do it later
Yeah, DH really kicks ass. I've only had a few problems with them, and they were all resolved very quickly. Their control panel is pretty handy, too.
Lemme know if you need help setting anything up (sounds like you've got it all under control, though)

How about you watch me cram $80 worth of cheesecake into my gaping maw in the middle of a romantic restaurant?looks like i owe kareem a piece of cheesecake in a romantic restaurant, just the two of us. or maybe i should buy you $80 worth of cheesecakes from HEB and watch you eat them all in one sitting.

Dreamhost does kick all kinds of ass, but they just changed their referrer thing, so you can't set it retroactively any more. So, if you don't sign up through a link or put in a name when you register, you're out of luck now.kbadr wrote:Jeremy, if you forgot to use me as a referrer, you can still go in and do it later

madeline, it was $180 for the most basic hosting for two years which was still a huge site. they waived the $50 set up charge because i paid for it all at once. they also gave me my one free domain because i was buying hosting. then when i put in the promo code the total was only $100. zippity doo dah.
kareem, i put kbadr as a referrer but it also mentioned something like i had to use either the promo code or say who referred me. although there were two fields, one where i put your user name and one where i put the code. let me know if they give you money. i'm curious to know if it worked.

Whoops. Looks like they changed their referral to use email address instead of username. Ah well, it's no biggie. Glad you were able to score cheap hosting, though. What domain did you register?
Oh yeah, and in case you haven't discovered it already, Dreamhost has a shitload of one-click install stuff that's great (blog software, photo gallery software, etc)
