As happy as I am about Conan's ascension, I am just as terrified about continually stumbling across Leno's big dumb potato head as I flip channels at 9:00 pm.
I hope to heavens that this prime-time experiment fizzles out and that Leno can enjoy a long retirement with his bajillion old-timey cars -- somewhere far, far away from any TV cameras.

I really hoped you were going to say that the reports were saying that Jimmy Fallon was going to go back to school to study law or was going to become a monk or that he was slowly evaporating. Any news there?Lants wrote:All the reports from the test show they did came back confirming what I hoped would be true.
I hear Fallon has been dominating in the ratings since day one.
Everything is getting watered down... except that the crowd that usually stays up through the Leno monologue might actually get exposed to Conan's very different humor.
I guess what I'm saying is that I wish Fallon would go away.

I always got the feeling Leno hated his job or else he was bored. I love Conan but I especially love Conan without writers, that was a beautiful time. Strangely enough I can't seem to find a single clip of Conan without writers on the internet it's like they tried to erase it from history so that the writers wouldn't feel bad.
I love people who make me laugh. I honestly think it's the thing I like most, to laugh. It cures a multitude of ills. It's probably the most important thing in a person.-Audrey Hepburn
Interviews with Jay always seemed forced and if he got sidetracked by the guest instead of going along with it (yes anding anyone?) He'd jump right back to his "script." It was painful to watch. So glad Conan's taking over.

Not at all. Jay wanted to do his show 365 days a year (I'm not even exaggerating). Conan never works on Mondays and Letterman tapes two shows on Thursdays so he doesn't have to work on Fridays. Jay wouldn't have any of that. Also, Conan and Letterman take 12 weeks of hiatus per year and Jay had to be convinced to take the six that he does now.ashleylowe wrote:I always got the feeling Leno hated his job or else he was bored.
Even with all that, he often flies to Vegas (and back) on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays to do stand-up and he does stand-up at the Hermosa Comedy and Magic Club every Sunday AND does stand-up at different events throughout the year, particularly during those hiatus weeks.
You can say what you want about his comedy, but his enthusiasm for the work borders on problematically obsessive.

agreed. Also agree with Chell about the yes anding. Maybe the constant work was why he seemed so forced to me. To each his own late night host!LuBu McJohnson wrote: BUT HE SUCKS! GRAGH!

I'm not disagreeing with his "quality" here. And I'm not a watcher of the show at all. I'm much more of a Conan fan if the discussion is over the best late night talk show hosts.ashleylowe wrote: To each his own late night host!
I'm just clearing up a misconception and giving credit where credit is due--and he deserves credit for his work ethic and enthusiasm. That's all.
Oh, and Harry the Cable Guy RULES!!! Go get it done!

Yep, but not in a co-host/sidekick role. He'll be the new announcer, taking over Joel's spot. Most likely, he'll be a lot more involved than Joel was.HerrHerr wrote:Wait. Are you saying Andy's back on the show?!!!Jastroch wrote:Also, with Andy Richter. Double sweet!
I saw bits of Leno's "last" show tonight, and damn, I really think he screwed himself by going to prime time. The show tonight was a non-event. He wasn't going off the air. He's just moving to an earlier timeslot. There seemed to be a collective shrug going on from everyone involved.
However, Conan was on and showed a short clip where he had senior citizens (basically, part of Leno's demographic) watch his show as part of a focus group. Better yet, Conan had make-up applied by some Oscar-winning make-up artist so he'd look like an older and different person in order to actually sit in on the focus group as the moderator. Yes, Conan basically showed a clip making fun of large segments of Leno's audience to show what his new show is going to be like.

I used to love Conan. I haven't watched him in years, though.
I've really been enjoying Craig Furgeson lately, which is odd because he's just another late night talk show host. He seems to be very playful and improvisational, inspiring himself pretty consistently. He really does just riff and ramble and find ways to make it amusing.

You work your life away and what do they give?
