UCB - report from my trip to NYC

Post by DollarBill »

So I've never taken a class at UCB, but based on the posts after the Matts gave their workshops in Austin, it sounds like their philosophy or angle is that you should find the game of the scene asap and hit is hard.

I saw two shows this weekend at UCB in New York, and gamey sketch-prov is not at all what I witnessed. Both nights there was a lot of patient scene building based around character and relationship. There was some real slice of life kinda stuff. I guess it all comes down to the individual performers. Some were good at characters and some were witty game players and some in between.

Asssscat was really, really good. It always amazes me when I see a show that good made up of performers who don't perform together regularly. It throws a wrench into the workings of my argument for ensemble, but it's cool to see people that are so good they can do great work in any situation.

Finally, it was interesting to me that both shows I saw consisted of ONE group playing the full set, and each group only had 5 or 6 people. As opposed to chicago where one show has three groups of 10 people.

That's all... just a random collection of thoughts about the improv I saw in NYC.
They call me Dollar Bill 'cause I always make sense.
