Bob and I went to Waterloo last week and picked up a bunch of stuff.

My favorite so far is Neko Case's Fox Confessor Brings the Flood.

Not so hot on the Lady Sovereign album I bought, but maybe that doofy London/reggae hip-hop will grow on me.

What have you recently gotten that is in heavy rotation?

The Sword...it's not for everyone, but those of you that are currently or are recovering metal heads, buy their album. You won't be disappointed.

Man o man...

Image
I have been listening to the Small Faces 1967 third album, their first for Immediate Records. I like most of their stuff, but this one was hitting between their mod/r&b influenced singles for Decca and the more psychedelic (and generally harder) stuff they'd do on their next record (the amazing Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake). It's all of about 30 minutes long, with some singles from the era tacked onto the end, and the brevity (of both the songs and the album) make it feel so confident and fun that I keep putting it on repeat.

Image
When Erika and I went to waterloo we also picked up the new Ghostface Killah album, Fishscale. Now, I loved Supreme Clientele, Ghostface's 1998 album, and so much of the other Wu Tang solo stuff (Liquid Swords!). But the last two Ghostface albums (Pretty Toney and Bulletproof Wallets) did very little for me. I read a review of this one, which talked about how tight it was and that MF Doom had done beats/production for 4 of the numbers and I was hooked. To tip the (fish)scales, Shannon mentioned how awesome the album was last weekend, and I trust anyone who is familiar with Edan.

Image
I originally heard this record after John Peel had passed away. In addition to his stacks and stacks (and rooms and rooms) of records and CDs, he kept a small box of 45s under his desk, which were records he prized very highly (at a given time -- his family has said that records were rotated in and out of the box all the time). He said basically that if there were a fire, he would grab his family and that box. Anyway, this was one of the singles -- a great song, and great example of mid-60's beat music from the UK. The Mighty Avengers only released 4 singles, this being the second, between 1964 - 1965. They'd somehow gotten aligned with Andrew Loog Oldham, manager of The Rolling Stones (who also went on to form Immediate Records, which released the above Small Faces record), and were given an early Mick Jagger / Keith Richards tune to record: "So Much In Love." The single did well, but they faded into obscurity with little mention. The A-side has been on one or two compilations of Jagger/Richards-penned tunes, but for the most part their discography remains unreleased.

Image
This has a similar story to the previous -- another one of the singles in John Peel's record box. As a band, they have a similar story as well... recorded a few singles and faded into obscurity. Originally known as Joseph and Lorraine Ximenes, the siblings moved from Brooklyn to Florida, rechristened themselves as Travers (or Travis) and Coventry Fairchild, hooked up with a bassist and drummer, and became the Clefs of Lavender Hill. They put out this single in the spring of 1966 on a local label (Thames) with "Tell Me Why" as the A-side, but radio stations picked up on the Mersey/Beatle-esque B-side "Stop! Get A Ticket" and it was rereleased nationally (on Date) with the sides switched. They put out a few more singles, and even compiled an LP for release, but declining sales forced Date to drop them and they were gone. Some interest has sparked since the track was included on Rhino's 4-CD Nuggets set in 1998, but "Ticket" is still the only officially released track on CD (the LP is said to languish on the shelves of some record company warehouse -- the old story of so many great records).

The Chills were one of the best New Zealand bands of the last 25 years (and that's among a LOT of great Kiwi bands, mostly released on the great Flying Nun Records), and yet still virtually unknown here in the US. This 1986 record (released on Creation in the UK, and Homestead over here) was a compilation of singles released in the early 1980's and shows off some of the best sides of the band. I'd highly recommend getting it except it's f-ing out of print for some reason. No matter, just track it down.

...Also, the new Oneida (coming out soon), the Danielson record "Ships", Edith Frost's second album "Telescopic", some old Velvet Underground live shows, and much more...

I have become old and lame, and most of my car time is spent listening to audiobooks.

I'm currently wading through the Discworld series. I'm on book 14 at the moment.
Also, listening to "Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell" for the second time.

Music wise, I'm listening to The Small Stars, The Crash Test Dummies, and The White Ghost Shivers.

Liquid Swords being the shit has been seconded.

More amazing music (hip-hop):
Blackalicious - The Craft (although it's still not better than their first full-length NIA)
Danger Doom - The Mouse and the Mask (two awesome hip-hop artists team up to rap all about Cartoon Network's Adult Swim)
Saul Williams - Amethyst Rockstar (slam poet turned performer who writes some amazing lyrics)
Aesop Rock - Labor Days (will always be one of the greatest modern hip-hop albums ever, in my opinion)
Kool Keith - Black Elvis/Lost in Space (who doesn't love a little Kool Keith?)

More amazing music (rock):
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Show Your Bones (for those who've heard of the YYY, this album is much better, much more sonically diverse, and a bit toned-down)
The Arcade Fire - Funeral (I can never get enough of this album)
DeerHoof - The Runners Four (just weird fucking music man)
OKGO - either of their two albums, but it's mostly just fun music

More amazing music (other):
TV on the Radio - Young Liars (they have a new album coming out in June!)
Smog - A River Ain't Too Much to Love
Goldfrapp - Felt Mountain
Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mary

that's what I've got for now.

a lie which is half a truth is ever the blackest of lies

a cd fell into my hands and it's only fitting that i explain the how's and why's. i received it in the mail sometime ago. no heads-up. no letter. nothing inside but the cd and a note - 5 words long.

N is type of man, where every preconceived notion you have of him upon the first fwe impressions, is the exact opposite of who he really is. he is calm, intelligent, non-threatening and reserved, but this... is only half the picture. i never truly knew him until one friday night in the long long ago. we where at a party chill'n with some friends. N sat on the couch by himself. minutes later this hot girl (i can not stress how hot this girl was) sat next to him on the sofa. they started talking. chad and i roamed around the party to talk to some other people. 2 hours later, N and this girl are still talking on this couch fully engaged in conversation. 30 minutes later, i'm in a line for the bathroom when N and the girl walk out of the bathroom together. i was the driver for the evening, so i drove chad, N, and this girl home. N was polite enough to walk her to her door. a minute later, he waves goodnight to me and chad in the car.

but that's not the best part of the story. N got fired from his job a week later, for never showing up to work. days later N informed me, that he had his clothes on for only 2 hours that entire week.

later night encounters with N include me pointing out the hottest girl in the party and watching as N would walk straight up to them completely fearless. now keep in mind, he's not sleazy. he's quiet, calm, non-threatening, subtly intellegent, and talks about cartoons. we would give him hilarious goals, like entering words like, "avocado" or "koochie koochie koo" into the conversation. he won every time. one time he walked straight up to a girl and asked, "excuse me, you don't happen to have any chicken on you?" when the girl waited patiently inside of a minute for the punch of the pick-up line, N simply stated that he was hungry. 1 hour later, he came back to us and said, "i fucked her." its awe inspiring. i could never truly figure out how he does it. i admit that i get some pull off the "i never dated an asian before," but i think the "i never dated a black guy before" pull is just one rung higher. he's also very non-threatening and very approachable. but don't be fool ladie; he's, as chad would say, a stealth bomber of cock.

hanging out with N for months prior to that initial night i would never have guessed there was a sinister casanova underneath the quiet meek geek that we all knew. he's in NYC now. i received an envelope from him recently. no heads-up. no letter. nothing inside but the cd and a note - 5 words long.

"I fuck to this. -N"

Grime is the pigeonhole in which they squeeze that kind of music.

I may be an unreliable source, but let me also agree with Jason and Phil on it's status of "the shit."

YEASCHE! Me likey the 'hoof! Erika and I saw them at Emo's a few months ago. In addition to their albums, they are a great live band. That drummer is the shit. Like, liquid-swords-the-shit. I also like the Wolf Parade, TVOTR, and much of the other stuff you mentioned. I love Smog. Love. You know he is now an Austin resident? Apparently he is.

AHHHH Bob! It's all so awesome, smog lives in Austin?!?!, you saw Deerhoof, I've seen TVOTR live. I am still highly envious of your music knowledge, and I would love to sometime sit and pick your brain about various musical things.

Many people have something they loved before improv, mine was music. Music and theatre.

That's it for now.
