Hey AIC,

In the past I've been fond of spoiling myself and getting a high-dollar hair cut. A high price tag is one way to ensure you get a quality cut -- someone who understands fashion trends, hair texture and growth patterns, and who listens to how you want it cut -- plus they give you some nice extras to make it seem worth the high price tag... designer shampoo that's animal friendly, head & neck massage, etc.

However, I am pretty sure those days are gone for me. I THINK I'd rather spend my cash on other stuff. Yet, I'm still pretty vain about my hair, and my hair is still growing, and I'm still a snob about who cuts my hair.

I want a simple cut that lasts long. I'm willing to leave my hair long bc I don't want to become an indentured servant to my hair stylist. I hate thinking of getting a bad cut where I'd have to wait until it grows out before trying another stylist which may or may not make me happy.

In short, are any of you out there happy with your hair stylist and paying less than $50? $40? If so, please PM me and tell me about it.

Bird's Barbershop on Burnet. I went twice. It's cheap, you don't need an appointment, and they're all very good there.

Bird's strongly seconded. I go to the one down here on South Lamar, near Oltorf. Not only is it cheap and good, but they usually play awesome music, and if you have to wait, they bring you beer.

Bird's thirded. I go (went? will still go when am in austin?) to shannon at the burnet location. she's magical with color. and i really liked the haircuts she gave me.

Fourth-ed. I got my hair cut at Bird's last, and I got the same cut I got the time before, only this time it was half as much (and just as good).

Birds is great! I can also recommend Floyds Barbershop. It is similar to Birds. I like Birds better (and prefer to support local businesses), but Floyds is closer to your house. It is in the new Arbor Whatever Center (near the Domain).

Definitely recommend Bird's. I followed one women from the one on S. Lamar to the one on N. Burnett and now go to her at Topaz. She charged me five bucks for my last haircut. Most likely going back to Bird's when she moves in the new year.

Just to vary things up, I like going to WET on Congress just a bit south of Riverside. I pay $30 for a really good haircut, but I also have the option to come in for a free dry trim between haircuts. You know, when it isn't long enough to spend money on another cut, but is clearly getting a little shaggy.

I go to the JR Salon on Burnet just north of 45th.
It's an Aveda Training salon, where stylists get their Aveda wings....

I see Frankie, her cuts are $45, she has been cutting for quite some time.

The newbie stylist cuts start at $30....

I bought a pair of clippers at Walgreens several years ago that cost me about 20 bucks. That and a Mach III razor are all you need.

I used to go to an Aveda school of hair design in Denver, and get a gorgeous good smelling hair cut for 8$. That was only 10 years ago... wait, that was 10 years ago? shit! Anyway... moral of the story: boo inflation.
