They are putting up really weird art installations all over campus. There's one out front of the PCL, one in the PCL lobby, one out in front of the UT post office, and that one you posted, too. That quarter of campus is about all I've covered over the last few weeks, so who knows where else they are. They did put a website up saying: landmarks.utexas.edu
whatever that's worth.

Actually they're from the Met as in the Metropolitan Museum of New York. Two very different institutions - both with giant collections that for the most part do not see the light of day. I haven't been up to campus recently to see them in situ...but I'm supportive of this in principal and on two levels. One is for Austin and two is for the artists (and their respective donors) who didn't create art (or donate it) to sit in crates in warehouses on Long Island.bradisntclever wrote:Wow, these sculptures are all on long term loan from MOMA. They're going to be fully ready to unveil in mid-September.
If I was associated with MOMA and somebody wanted sculptures, I'd get some stuff from a scrap yard and send it off.
For the most part, anything will be a blessing for this city - even if it's subjected to the unfortunate puerile treatment such as the photo above. The UT board room has traditionally been where taste goes to die so kudos to them for following through on their decades old plan of incorporating more public art onto campus. There are so many chapters to the long story of Austin's artistic adolescence that I see this as quite welcome. I still recall the same institution's not so distant decision to kick Herzog & de Meuron to the curb when they proposed (shock!) a modern building for the Blanton Museum comission. What was UT expecting? I guess we can answer that now...they got it.
sorry - je rant.

D'oh. I read that wrong. I saw all the Ms and immediately defaulted to MoMA. I've been to both, too... for what it's worth.
The sculptures aren't entirely installed yet. They still haven't finished the one out in front of the PCL or inside the PCL (where I lived for the last few days finishing my lovely improv-related thesis). I'd give it at least 2-3 weeks.
