Fast Food Nation

Post by kbadr »

So, Kacey and I just watched Fast Food Nation. It was alright. The most interesting part was seeing the opening and closing scene, in a board room of a fast food restaurant. One of the executives was none other than Mitch Baker, from Backpack Picnic! Go Mitch!

Food Nation was meh. There was so much missing from the book. It's doubtful I'll watch it again, but I'll definitely watch Idiocracy again and saw on IMDB that Mitch is also in that. I'll look out for him when I watch it again.

I was not a fan of the movie. After a while, the premise wore thin.

And from what I read, Mike Judge didn't like how the movie turned out either.

It seemed more like Mike Judge got pissed at how Fox threw his movie around and then spread him out in as few theatres as possible in order to meet their requirements.

That's because they cut out the bit where Luke Wilson goes to a church, and inside there's a professional wrestler Jesus versus Satan match going on. It was sight to behold.

You could see my arm in that shot. If only they left the arm in, everything would have been fine.

I just watched it, and as a fan of dystopia fiction and psycho-socio-analysis, I must say I liked/loved it, too. Or, as the denizens of 2505 would say, it wuz, like, totaly awsome, dued!

Also, Mitch's (albeit short) part was awesome.

Fast Food Nation turned my aunt into a hardcore vegetarian. Actually, I don't even think that's a proper term, because she won't even eat vegetables. She only feels safe eating soy, now.

Has anyone read the book? I have. I didn't see the movie version.

The book inspired some serious life changes for me that I've stuck with for the past 4 years.

I'm convinced there's going to be a special edition director's cut of the movie released sometime in the future (as opposed to sometime in the past). I love the movie, but yeah, Mike Judge couldn't stand the way the movie company dealt with this movie. After watching the movie and the beating it gives to a certain news entity and some fast food restaurants, I understand why they wanted to hide it. I don't agree with it at all, but I understand it. I still really liked it though and would own it except I'm waiting for that eventual (hopefully) release of a special edition with all the scenes added back in and a scathing commentary track by the Mike Judge and others. The DVD has already made 20 times the money the theatrical release did, so it could happen. It's only likely if the rights revert back to Mike Judge somehow though.

Book? Do you mean the short story The Marching Morons?

Have any of you seen Earthlings? Here is a link if you want to...

This is for part 1. There are 3 parts. You might be able to dig around for the whole thing, uninterrupted, if you feel the need. WARNING: THIS IS VERY GRAPHIC AND DISTURBING. IT IS VERY HARD TO WATCH!!!

This film has seriously gotten me to consider being a vegetarian. I am at a crossroads because I generally do not like the taste of vegetables and/or vegetarian style dishes (anything with Tofu/soy, many of the meat substitutes, etc.). By switching to a vegetarian diet, I will severely be limiting my food options. Tofu/soy, in addition to not tasting very good to me, also give me a headache - especially tofu. Plus, I love to eat meat (I am sure that will end up on Context Wars...yeesh). After watching the video, I can't really justify eating animal flesh. However, if I am not going to eat meat because of the horrific treatment of animals, then I should also not consume/use animal based products of any sort (dairy/eggs, leather, wool, the list goes on forever).

What do I do??? For the last week, I have basically stuck to a vegetarian diet. The only exception was a party on Saturday where the only choices were BBQ or nothing. I chose BBQ. My wife chose nothing (I was proud of her). I have been eating dairy/eggs, beans, and the few vegetables that I do like. I need options, or this will not last for me.

Anybody got any good suggestions??? How about good vegetarian recipies??? Please email them to me at improvstitute at yahoo dot com.

Justify eating meat by acknowledging that the Meat Industry is far bigger than any meager diet protest can ever hope to affect.

Don't let my cynicsim stop you from eating your greens. They're good for you.

I eat meat because the meat would eat me. Eating meat is how we evolved, and vice versa. In moderation, it is good for you.

Letting images of the killing floor dissuade you from eating meat seems strange to me. Yes, it's unpleasant. The animal/meat is treated and processed like a product, because we consume it and buy it as a product. Even if the animals were killed "humanely", they'd still have to be skinned. The organs would still have to be removed. And if you were shown video of it, you would find it repulsive.

Fast food, however, is disgusting, and I want to read Fast Food Nation just so I'll think twice before I order chicken strips or a burger.

I was an extra during the filming of a few different scenes (this is the only one I can find my whole me in) and remember Judge seeming really stressed during the whole thing. I doubt we'll ever get a Judge-approved special edition anytime soon... he hates the experience... said he won't do live action again because of it. Anytime anyone asks him about the movie now, he just gets grumpy and tries to change the subject.

The movie has it's good deal of weaknesses, but it's still pretty funny.
