Favorite lines/moments?

Post by Justin D. »

There were a lot of awesome moments during OoB. I saw some of the best improv and sketch comedy I've ever seen. While there were many great moments and lines throughout the entire festival, here are a few lines and moments that stick out to me.

Silver City Pink: During the first scene where they were playing "I never," one of the women was getting very upset. Another one suddenly yelled, "It's just a game!" and cracked everyone up.

GGG: Shana's character choice cracked me up. The fact that it was a musical show, but she went with a character who had no rhythm was awesome. One of my favorite moments came when Mo (as her mother) was trying to explain what it meant to be Little Ms. Peanut. Mo said Shana's character (Mo's character's daughter) was nothing more than an empty person without the title (I think that's right). Shana said, "Oh, I thought you were going to say I was just a shell. You know, cause of the peanut."

Get-Up: Bringing Robert, the husband, back in a smooth and funny way was an impressive feat. It must have been if I remember the character's name because I don't often do that after seeing an improv show.

Improvised Shakespeare: This was one of the most impressive things I've ever seen on stage, improvised or not. I was as impressed with the straight lines as I was with the funny ones.

"When children speak of birds, bees are soon to follow."

"A tongue must be free to wag, else it be bound."

That last one sounds so profound, but it's such a simple statement, like a lot of Shakespeare's stuff.

My favorite moment of the whole festival was at the end of the Shiner show. Someone had run out and bought them a bucket of Shiner and placed it in front of them when the lights came down on their show. When the lights came back on they saw the beers, grabbed them and held them aloft.

The look of joy on their faces coupled with the audience's reaction was like a summary of everything that's awesome about Out of Bounds.

best moment was huddling around the last hole as a human wall of improvisers, as we waited for something mysterious and crazy to happen.

I was fortunate enough to see Dave's Civil War reenactment hole moment.

Dave Razowsky, in workshop: "What's the difference between life and an SNL sketch? Life ends."

Mostly I felt really proud and happy to be a part of this community. I can't be objective about watching my friends play, but I know what that thunderclap of surprised, sustained laughter sounds like, and I heard a lot of it rolling over Austinites onstage this weekend.

For me that feeling came to a head on Sunday when the supersized Cupholders came out hitting on all twelve cylinders (Bill: this is possible, twelve cylinders?) and proceeded to level the place. I felt like the guy at the big concert at the end of the movie who keeps saying to everyone, "Hey, see those guys up there? They're friends of mine!" Objectively, they were just one part of an awesome, perfectly balanced improv show, but I also felt like they were representing for all of us, and my heart was filled with love and gladness for them and for everyone who's a part of this bizarre little enclave. Righteous work, everybody.

I experienced many very sweet moments during this fest. I saw a ton of improv since I was running lights for most of the shows this weekend. Two shows in particular stand out in my mind.

1. Pgraph - I've seen them a ton of times, quite possibly more than anyone else in the community. The audience absolutely ate up every single thing that Pgraph was laying down that night. I thought they had a tight story, were very playful with each other and that Roy has a surprisingly vast knowledge of blacksmithing. I was super proud of them and they represented Austin in a great way.

2. Knuckleball Now - I had never seen Knuckleball play with more than three people before this festival. This was the first time I had seen them with all five in the cast. It was also the first time I have seen Mikey D. play at all....ever. (I don't know how this happened either) Before the show I spoke to them about how they wanted their lighting and they told me to feel free to make offers. Well, I made a ton of them and they rolled with every one of them. Ratliff was on the keyboard setting the mood and I was matching that mood with the lights. We transformed that show from a kickass improv show into a kickass improvised theater experience. That was definitely the most fun I had doing lights during this festival.

I was very proud that all of the hometown troupes I saw brought it with both hands. I also loved seeing so many different styles from out of towners. Great shows. Great friends. Great time. I can't wait till next year.

I learned it all through the power of reading! Well, listening to someone else reading on the way to work.

My fav show was by the Inflatable Bettys, and a great moment there was when they had an audience volunteer doing a cafe/first date scene with them. The female improvisor was being shy and flirty, and finally just blurted out: "I'm divorced. I want you to know that."
The volunteer: "I'm married."
And the whole crowd laughed, so did his wife.

I also enjoyed the hanging out in the green room/box office area while the shows were going on.

Razowsky's workshop was really good too.

Dave Razowsky's class: "The thing about Inventiontown is you take lots of pictures but there is never anything there."

and in his show: But my novel is called "There is No There There."

and one of my favorite moments was in Vinyl Destination when, after Christina says "The next person to piss me off gets fired." Kristin ran backstage to pull Cody out and told him "Say something!"

Mos def, one of my fav momes from OoB was in The Knuck Now show, which had been carrying a theme of this girl being an awful-but-successful contestant at a spelling bee competition.

In my fav mome, the girl had been kidnapped and taken to some dark, RED scary place, and Mike D held her down letting her know of the horrors she was about to experience (and if somebody could remind me what her foul deed was that warranted that treatment...?) while a strange noise came from off stage by a guy with nefariously flapping arms. That strange noise guy creeped forward to the girl, never saying a word, just staring and buzzing, and finally Mike D's voice crescendoed from behind the frighted girl, and he warned, "BEHOLD, THE SPELLING BEE!"

it was the moment right after sean and lampe were brought up on stage sunday night. i had just left the stage and i had nothing to do while shannon and mike introduced the LA kids. i just kind of paced around close to tears thinking about the festival, the show i had just had and how well my troupemates had performed, the fact that i'm leaving, the greatness of 300 people being exposed to amazing work, the impending missing of my mom and sister and nephews (6 and 4 years each) who had just seen me perform for the first time. it was a sudden combination of many positive and scary emotions, but mostly pride for the austin scene, selfish pride of my own accomplishments, and how amazing a week it had been.

so that was my favorite moment. it's almost impossible to say my favorite line but i liked the peasant's plea in the shakes. show when she knew she would have sex soon, "I am to be breeched."

and bill's "Nothing could be worse than ripping half your own face off." in response to Ace's "Do you have any idea what they'll do to me?"

I had goosebumps for about 10 minutes after sunday's show ended. I am truely honored to have been a part of it.
