identifying improviser laughs

Post by arthursimone »

We've all been there on stage, lights cooking us in the face, unable to see the faces of audience, only able to communicate with the outside world when the occasional sound of laughter rings our little eardrums... But lo! there is that laugh, that one very recognizable laugh that means _____ is in the audience! At last! gratitude and validation! This, what we're doing on stage, will a) matter and b) continue!

my question:

Who in the AIC has the best laugh?

my vote: Dave Buckman

Caitlin Sweet is back for the weekend, and she came to the Cinzano/PGraph show last night. We all loved hearing her delightful cackle in the audience once more.

As for favorites, I think it has to be Buckman's. Short but sweet.

Jeremy's and Rachel's are my favorites to pick out when I am in a show.

Greg and Doug also has have great laughs that feel loving.
If you disrespect your character, or play it just for laughs, it will sell some gags, but it's all technique.

There are a lot of distinct laughs. Buckman, Wallace, Caitlin, and I can still hear Jay Bernardo...no, seriously. He's yucking it up in Taiwan and it's keeping me up at nights...

But I think my favorite has got to be Lamb. When he laughs he sounds like he is, just for an instant, a being of pure joy.

I definitely can pick out all those laughs that have been mentioned above. Asaf, York, Jastroch and Terp all stand out for me as well. I'd have to say that Buckman is my favorite as well. He was one of the tougher coaches I've had and if I can make him laugh while I'm onstage, I'm secretly saying "yyyyyyeeeesssssss" in my head.

Hard to pick just one, but gotta ditto the Bearded(less) One. Jeremy's laugh is very honest and genuine. I don't think he gives token laughs at all. He laughs only when something deserves laughter. If I am wrong, then you sir are an even better actor than I could have imagined (insert Dave Buckman laugh here).

Sitting on the top row at the Hideout during TNA last night reinforced that Dave Buckman wins in my eyes and ears.

Let's face it -- that show was shit without Buckman.

The stand-out laugh on three years worth of GGG videos is always Bob Apthorpe.

To me, anyway. :D

Also, it was really really sweet to hear my brother laughing in the audience. After 2 1/2 years, he finally came to see a show. It threw me for a second because I recognized the laugh, but couldn't place it to any of the improvisers I knew.

Also, although Kaci doesn't have a particularly distinctive laugh, once something hits her funny bone, she can be really loud and raucous.

Dav's are so varied. You've got the singular "(h)ah!" which signifies bemusement, and the more coveted, almost triumphant "hahhah!". You can really tell he's into it.
