help me create a beer logo

Post by the_orf »

Hey you creative people,
I need to come up with a logo/symbol/icon for Orf Brewing. I figure this crowd can generate ample ideas on the topic. Thus I humbly ask for your creative input.

I am not looking for anyone to design the logo just yet. Right now I am merely taking descriptive suggestions. For example, somebody might say, "your logo should be a unicorn standing on the back of a turtle" or maybe "Bill Stern pooping through his eyeballs." Actual graphics or pictures of these things are not necessary.

All ideas will be considered, regardless of how relevant or usable they seem. Hopefully the ideas will somehow relate to Orf Brewing. If I end up using your idea, I'll make a special batch of beer in your honor.

In general, this trademark-worthy symbol should be able to somehow fit on a tap handle. It would also be good if the image potentially looks cool in silhouette. Other than that, it's wide open to interpret as you will.

Thank you in advance for any ideas!

an ORFan hoisting a pint with both hands, a look of sheer joy on his face. Done fisheye style, so that the pint is hoisted toward the viewer.

Seriously, though, a label is a huge huge deal. Wineries spend millions on designing proper labels. You should know how a wine tastes simply by looking at its label.

This is similar with beer, although beer typically has more stress on image in its branding. The label should also hint at taste (something that can just change colors to earth tones and be the Autumn Ale label, for example), but image is huge.

Do you want it to say local? Bats, skyline, rivers, ColdTowne Theater, etc
Do you want it to say manly? Stallions, trains, my picture, etc.
Do you want it to say pretentious? modern art, a turtleneck, a ponytail, etc.

I would think more about the image you want your beer to project and the type of drinker you want it to apeal to before thinking of logo designs.

I have always been struck by the similarity of "Orf" to "Earth" maybe a globe atop a stein of beer, or Orf holding the Earth all Atlas-style.

Or for that matter, a bat with a ponytail and turtleneck.

Oh I know! A really ancient looking toad with runes and strange symbols on its back.

I don't know why but "Orf" makes me think of a castle nested into a snowy peak. Maybe it is because Orf sounds like a fantasy name.

A big fancy, storybook, "O" with wheat shafts curling upward on the lower sides of the "O"; doves with wheat shafts in their beaks flying above it; and a cloud-shaped stein of beer in the middle of the "O", topped by a big foamy, cloud -- all done as a woodcut illustration.

I think it's obvious you should take a profile or three-quarters angle picture of your whole head and neck with your hair as poofed out and fro-ish as possible. Then slap a photoshop filter on there to make it look like a line drawing and call it a day.

Also, do you have to bring up the ocular diarrhea EVERY chance you get? It was ONE TIME!!!!
They call me Dollar Bill 'cause I always make sense.

A troll or hulk like creature either rising from a beer or quaffing a beer.

I think a seal, because they make a sound kind of like "orf" or a walrus because they're strong and are close enough to seals that it still works, on a patch of ice, their habitat and the home of ice cold beer.

Oh man, a walrus on an ice floe holding a beer and saying Orf in a big cartoon bubble would be the shit.

This is why I'm posting here. I'm curious to see what your various impressions/images of me are. From there, I will try to determine what is actually not insulting or demeaning to me. So far you've produced quite a wide variety. Keep 'em coming, please!

If there is a single word to sum up the image I want to project, it is "exuberant." I might even coin the new word "exuberate," which would mean "to cause exuberance or to make oneself exuberant."

Let's see what images and slogans that stirs up amongst you.

It's not YOUR image you need to capture, it's the image you want the beer to have. That said, I think of you as funky. That plus exhuberant to me equals a picture of a Gaudi esque structure or some kind of surrealist art that also has bright colors and not a morose theme. Throw in a phoenix or a some shit for the hell of it.

I know you're joking, but a burning, spread-winged pheonix would actually a pretty badass beer logo. Simple, iconic, looks good on a t-shirt and pint glass...
