video codecs

playing video on my computer has become pretty annoying, whether it be a dvd or .avi or .mp4 or whatever. Often the audio will keep going while the video freezes on one frame for a full minute.

Last time it was like this, someone told me it was a codecs problem, so I downloaded Tsunami filter pack and it started working well. Alas, no more! Maybe it's my whole video card that's messed up??

Any recommendations? My computer knowledge only goes so far.

hmm, these problems can be tough.

Some people swear by the GOM player. http://www.gomplayer.com/main.html

It comes with its own codec pack and looks nice and plays nearly everything.

Another option would be to try a different media player. VLC Media Player has been great to me and I believe it comes with most codecs (it plays DVDs, CDs, avi, divx, xvid, mp4, Quicktime, etc.). The reason I love it though is that it uses very little resources for the program itself -- leaving more processing power to decoding/playing the video.
