improv team names

Post by erikamay »

inspired by mo's reply to dave in another forum, i wondered what people's pet improv team names were.

here are a few of mine that i havent had the opportunity to foist upon an entire team...

lazy susan

and the entirely sophmoric 'hoof hearted'.

and, the new fave 'old white nissan'.

Wes, Kareem, Valerie, Phil and I are going through the pain of finding a troupe name right now. So there's loads and loads of names that we won't actually use. At one point the list was something like 200+ names strong. It's now around 45 names long I think.

Here are the favorites of mine that we've already rejected:

Kittens in a Shotglass (we use this all the time, but it's probably just in jest)
A Totally Awesome Tattoo of a Skull Eating a Snake and Shit
Look, a Zeppelin!
The Dark Bloodlords
Crackers by a Lakeside
Mr. Self-Destruct
Silly String Theory
Time to Shave Grandma
A Wonderful, Loving Relationship
The Slithy Toves
Unattended Baggage
The Roustabouts
Futz
Chewed Alive
Karmic Bitch Slap

And many many many many many more.

A winner!

I was on a very short-lived team called Cats 2. I regret wasting the name on drunken barprov.

I've always wanted to use the name Timothy Whistlepenis for a team or a character, but it's never come up. Someday...

And the name The Nod has always stuck with me. If I don't use it for an improv team, then I need to start one of those Scandinavian black metal bands with it.

I'm still gonna push for:

improv~1.bat (a 5 1/4" floppy logo, with the name scrawled across the upper left label)
GOTO 10
Vorpal Slapstick
Grown-up Band Fags
Ramshackle Rocketship
The Bold Decievers
Hannibal's March
and Hitler Fucking a Donkey

Actually, none of these have made the cut...so far. Roy mentioned several of the others I like. (Dark Bloodlords forever!)
There are about 10 I really want to discuss with the troupe, but I'll keep most of them under wraps for now (not that many people haven't already heard half of them).

My old troupe, Ed 32 went through a long naming stage and came up with at least 50 names. Among my favorites were:

The Smell of Fresh Plumbs
I am a Truck
Starving, Hysterical, Naked
Play with the Bear
and
Pickled Infant Hands

What's not in a name...

Post by arclight »

One name considered for what became First Round Draft was New Car Smell. An also-ran for WCBH (a great name that should never have been changed IMO) was Hugh Downs Syndrome which I like for it's abject tastelessness.

I still contend that just as any academic field is not actually science if it needs the word 'science' in it's title, a troupe whose name contains the words 'funny', 'comedy', or 'laugh' is not funny. This is an extension of the '"People's Democratic Republic" rule and goes triple for 'Intelligent Design' and 'Compassionate Conservatism.' Though at least one of those is an oxymoron, and sadly The OxyMorons has already been taken (viva Lampe!)

Lazy Reader

Post by sara farr »

Okay, I'm sure I'm a lazy reader now, bc I saw "WHJ" and thought it said "WWJD" -- all of which made me think a fun improv troupe name would be "WWJD" - or - "What Would Jury Do". Can yoose guys think of anything else "WWJD" could stand for (besides the original pop-religion thing).

I think "Saffron Oppression" with a Dali Lama icon would be a fun troupe name.

Image

this is the first group photo of available cupholders. the poster board is our final five names. we put random words we liked into a hat and pulled out a couple sheets at a time to make the names. available cupholders was the first one we pulled out and we busted out laughing.
other finalists were:

Altogether Now
Altogether 5 (this is actually on the poster board but hard to read. This lost by one vote to Av. Cup. - dodged a huge bullet there.)
The People Club
Emphatic Failure Club
Teeth Pain
Blank Noise
Atomic Force People
Easy Epiphany
The Tangible Space
Klass
Schmolocaust
Brainchild
Bonus
Ace and the Acettes (not a serious contender)
Realization Burn
The Ruse
A Touch of Class
BOX
Axis of Improv

in the end, we picked the longest, and most difficult to understand and remember. fuck it.

a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet, know what i'm sayin?
