February 13, 2007. Toronto, ON – CBC Television and The Second City are proud to announce that production has begun on a televised talent search to find The Second City’s Next Comedy Legend. Sketch comedy performers from all over Canada will compete to join the ranks of such legendary Canadian performers as John Candy, Martin Short, Catherine O’Hara, Mike Myers, Dan Aykroyd, Dave Thomas and Eugene Levy, all of whom got their start at The Second City. But more than just a talent search, the show will use Second City’s satirical point of view to send up the genre and to cast a whimsical critical eye upon itself.
The Second City’s Next Comedy Legend is an eight-episode talent search series, that begins with regional audition events, and then moves on to a finalist stage produced on The Second City stage in Toronto. It’s not stand-up comedy. Instead, aspiring sketch and improv comedy actors will be forced to truly work in partnership together in the spirit of “yes, and . . .â€
