Austin is a big film town. Just ask QT, Robert Rodriguez, Richard Linklater, and Tim League.
Austin is also a big writing town with a burgeoning comedy community.
Austin is not so much of an 'industry' town as LA (thank the gods.)
So, in the spirit of independent film, writing, and comedy and in cooperation with (say) the Alamo & Austin Film Society, I think AIC should look into bringing Lloyd Kaufman to Austin in 2008 to teach his [urel=http://www.troma.com/lloyds/masterclass/]"Make Your Own Damn Movie"[/url] master class in filmmaking (see pamphlet page 1 & page 2)
With over 30 years of experience making and selling movies (not just talking about them), Kaufman is a great resource to bring to Austin. He's also a goofball - his films include Squeeze Play, Chopper Chicks in Zombietown, Sizzle Beach USA, The Toxic Avenger (I-IV), The Class of Nuke'em High (I-III), & Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD and his company has picked up and released other independent films such as Surf Nazis Must Die!, Cannibal! The Musical (Trey Parker) and Fatty Drives the Bus (directed by Mick Napier. hint, hint)
I have no idea what a 2 day event would cost, but I think it'd be a great event to bring together the screen- and comedy writing, performing, and filmmaking communities in Austin. I'd love to have enough people to fill the Alamo for two days which would probably pay for the venue and for Lloyd's trip.
As people may know, I hate movies. That's not completely accurate (I won't go into details) - I can watch Troma films for days. They're low investment, memorable, accessible and fun. They're the kind of movies I'd make because they show an unvarnished independent viewpoint, as gross and stupid as they may be. They're different.
They also tend to break even. Some even make money.
With the dropping price of digital production and distribution and the wealth of creative people we have in the AIC and Austin in general, we're in a great position to make our own fun and learn a lot in the process.
So the punchline is this: does this sound like a reasonable plan? Does anyone with a feel for the film community know how this would play? Anyone else ever seen Fat Guy Goes Nutzoid or Ferocious Female Freedom Fighters?
Independent Film & Comedy crossover event?
Anything about the AIC itself.

I'd be down for making something like this happen.

I'm an old school Troma fan and I would totally be down with learning from the master of low-budget horror. Fat Guy Goes Nutzoid was disgustingly awesome. If you haven't seen Tromeo and Juliet...go rent it...now.
