FACT OF THE DAY: The first news of the D-Day invasion to reach England was delivered by a pigeon named Gustav, who was released by Reuters correspondent Montague Taylor from an observation ship when the landings commenced. Gustav flew against a 30mph headwind to reach England in five hours and 16 minutes, delivering the news that the invasion had begun while the fleet was still under radio silence. Gustav was later awarded the Dickin Medal for bravery.
