FACT OF THE DAY: One day after the 1986 Space Shuttle Challenger explosion, psychology professor Ulric Neisser asked his students to fill out a questionnaire about their experience witnessing the disaster. Two years later, Neisser gave the subjects the same questionnaire. The average accuracy of the subjects’ memories was less than 3 out of 7, with a quarter of them scoring zero. However the subjects’ average confidence in their memories was extremely high, and subjects were more likely to believe their recent memories than those they recorded just after the event.
