FACT OF THE DAY: Mario’s present-day appearance is largely a result of technical limitations in the 1981 “Donkey Kong” arcade game, where he first appeared as a 16-pixel-tall character named “Jumpman.” Designer Shigeru Miyamoto gave him a mustache to avoid drawing a mouth, a hat to avoid drawing hair, and overalls to help the arms appear distinct from the body.
