FACT OF THE DAY: Three years after Oliver Cromwell’s death in 1658, a group of Royalist opponents exhumed and beheaded his corpse. Cromwell’s head was displayed on the south side of Westminster Hall for more than 30 years, becoming a tourist attraction in its own right, before it was knocked down by a storm in the mid-1680s. A royal guard then took it home and kept it a secret until his death; afterwards it was sold to a series of museum owners before being donated to science in 1934 and finally reinterred in 1960.
