FACT OF THE DAY: Botanists recently determined that a bald cypress tree along North Carolina’s Black River is 2,624 years old, making it the third-oldest non-clonal tree known to science. Clonal trees can live much longer, since they continuously grow new versions of themselves; a stand of quaking aspen in Bryce Canyon National Park called “Pando” is at least 80,000 years old.
