FACT OF THE DAY: Many homes in Pittsburgh have a toilet installed in the basement with no walls for privacy or other bathroom essentials. These toilets were commonplace in the early 20th century as a preventative measure against sewage-system backups, so that any spillage would enter the basement instead of the home. “Pittsburgh Potties” are now obsolete, but most have been left in place.
