FACT OF THE DAY: The Saturn V rocket was taller than the Texas state capitol building and weighed almost 6.5 million pounds. In the two and a half minutes after ignition it accelerated from a standstill to 6,164 miles per hour, over three times as fast as a bullet. The Apollo 11 capsule’s final velocity en route to the moon was about 24,000 miles per hour, almost 7 miles per second.
