FACT OF THE DAY: The Titanic’s coal supply was discovered to be on fire when it departed Belfast on April 2, 1912. Engineers battled the fire by shoveling coal into the engine more quickly than planned, which might be the reason Titanic sailed into an ice field at top speed. A 2017 BBC documentary argues that the fire directly contributed to the ship’s sinking by weakening one of its watertight bulkheads.
