FACT OF THE DAY: On January 15, 1919—one hundred years ago this week—a 50-foot-tall storage tank containing up to 2.3 million gallons of molasses collapsed in the North End of Boston, unleashing a 25-foot-tall wave of molasses that expanded at 35 miles per hour and flooded several city blocks. The so-called Great Molasses Flood killed 21 people and injured 150.
