FACT OF THE DAY: Scientists have used ice core samples in Greenland to track the economic activity of the Roman Empire. Roman mines and foundries produced enough airborne lead pollution that it settled on the Greenland ice sheet. The amount of lead in the ice from one year to the next indicates how active Roman industrial activity was at the time.
