FACT OF THE DAY: On July 30, 1916, German saboteurs blew up an American munitions depot in Jersey City, NJ, shattering windows as far away as Times Square. Shrapnel from the explosion damaged the arm of the Statue of Liberty, over half a mile away; the stairway up the arm to the torch has been closed ever since.
