FACT OF THE DAY: Uranus rotates on its side, giving each of its poles 42 years of continuous sunlight, followed by 42 years of darkness. (There is slight controversy over which of its poles should be called “south” and “north.”) Recent computer modeling indicates that the extreme tilt is a result of a grazing collision with a planet twice the size of earth about four billion years ago.
