FACT OF THE DAY: Mount Tambora caused the largest climate effect in modern times, but it wasn’t the biggest eruption. On August 26 and 27, 1883, the island of Krakatoa suffered a series of explosions that collapsed the entire island into the sea. The largest, at 10:02 am on the 27th, is believed to be the loudest sound in human history; at approximately 310 dB, it was three million times louder than the Saturn V rocket and was heard 3,000 miles away. The Krakatoa eruption produced bright red sunsets around the world for a year.
