FACT OF THE DAY: Pan Am flight 18602 was en route from Los Angeles to Auckland NZ when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Being unable to return home over the Pacific, the flight crew did so to the west, surviving long flights over Australia and Africa (the plane could only land on water) and an attack by a Japanese submarine. On January 6, 1942, Pan Am 18602 landed at LaGuardia airport, the first commercial airplane to ever circumnavigate the world.
