FACT OF THE DAY: EU companies can apply for Protection of Geographical Indications (PGI) status, where products must be made in a location to advertise themselves as such. The most famous example is champagne, which legally must be made in the Champagne region. In 2007, Newcastle Brown Ale had its PGI status revoked when it moved its manufacturing to a new facility across the river (and outside the Newcastle city limits).
