FACT OF THE DAY: The name “California” was invented by Spanish author Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo for his 1500 novel The Adventures of Esplandián, where it describes an island kingdom ruled by Queen Calafia, a regal black woman with an army of female warriors and a flock of trained griffins. Hernán Cortés’s 1533 expedition visited the tip of Baja California, believed it to be an island, and named it after the fictional island. This belief persisted into the 18th century, appearing as such on many European maps, until a 1747 proclamation by the King of Spain finally set the record straight.
