FACT OF THE DAY: The term Pfeilstorch (German for "arrow stork") refers to a stork that returns to Europe after wintering in Africa with an arrow stuck in its body. 25 Pfeilstorches have been recorded in history; the earliest, captured in 1822, helped to prove that birds migrate to other regions during the winter, rather than (as was believed) turn into other animals or hibernate at the bottom of the ocean.
