FACT OF THE DAY: Prior to a rule change in 1954, it was customary for baseball players to leave their gloves on the field in between innings, rather than taking them back to the dugout. This led to a number of mishaps and pranks—according to Sports Illustrated, “if word got around that a certain player had a particular aversion to certain creatures,” that player “immediately became a target.”
