FACT OF THE DAY: In 1965, a Caltech doctoral student discovered that a coincidental alignment of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune would allow a space probe launched in the late 1970s to visit them all in a single voyage. To take advantage of this coincidence, the twin probes Voyager I and Voyager II were launched 40 years ago this summer. The next such planetary alignment won’t occur for 175 years.
