FACT OF THE DAY: The Tomb of Mausolus was built between 353 and 350 BCE for a provincial governor in present-day Bodrum, Turkey. Including its enormous pedestal, the tomb was over twice the height of the Parthenon and decorated in statues and sculptural friezes, with a bronze statue on top of Mausolus and his wife Artemisia driving a four-horse chariot. It stood for about 1,500 years before a series of earthquakes destroyed it. The word “mausoleum” derives from this building.
