FACT OF THE DAY: Beginning in about 1290, a remarkable number of illuminated European manuscripts depicted battles between knights and enormous snails. It’s believed that the snails initially represented Lombards, a disliked group of people, but their continued use in the manuscripts of margins is a mystery.
