FACT OF THE DAY: Until about 1950, the Gros Michel banana was the only type of banana sold around the world. Banana growers then switched to the Cavendish banana, which was less sweet than the Gros Michel, but also less susceptible to a type of wilt called Panama disease. Most people born after 1950 have never tasted a Gros Michel banana.
