FACT OF THE DAY: The water balloon was invented accidentally, when Edgar Ellington was attempting to produce a waterproof sock for troops to avoid trench foot. When one of his socks sprang a leak during a test, Ellington angrily threw the sock down and was amused by the splash it created.
