FACT OF THE DAY: On April 18, 1995, Brian Udell ejected from an F-15E fighter jet over the Atlantic Ocean while plummeting downward at greater than the speed of sound (over 780 miles per hour). Udell is the only pilot known to have survived such an attempt; his co-pilot was killed instantly upon colliding with the supersonic shock wave around the plane. Udell sustained severe injuries but was flying fighter jets again within 10 months.
