FACT OF THE DAY: Pay toilets were relatively common in the United States until the late 1960s, when teenage brothers Ira and Michael Gessel founded the "Committee to End Pay Toilets in America” with two other high-school friends. Despite the trivial nature of their complaint, CEPTIA convinced the city of Chicago to outlaw all pay toilets in 1973, and a dozen states by 1976, at which point the organization disbanded. By 1980, there were almost no pay toilets in the US.
