FACT OF THE DAY: On this date in 1844, a cannon on the newly-built warship USS Princeton ruptured during a demonstration for visiting dignitaries. The resulting explosion killed six people, including the Secretary of State and Secretary of the Navy. President John Tyler was spared only because he had stayed below decks for drinks.
