FACT OF THE DAY: There are over 300 flavors of Kit Kat available in Japan, including wasabi, sake, and purple sweet potato. Nearly every region of Japan has a signature flavor only available in that area. In December, shops sold a single Kit Kat stick covered in dark chocolate and coated with gold leaf for ¥2016 (about $16). Its popularity in Japan might be a linguistic accident: “Kit Kat” sounds similar to “Kitto Katsu,” a common expression wishing good luck, which started a trend of gifting the bars as good-luck presents.
