FACT OF THE DAY: 75% of the population of Whittier, Alaska (population 220) lives in Begich Towers, a 14-story building that once served as an army barracks. The building contains 196 condominiums as well as the town’s post office, police department, city hall, and grocery store, eliminating much of the need to go outside. The town school is connected to it via an underground tunnel.
