FACT OF THE DAY: The ARES (Advanced Rail Energy Storage) project in Nevada uses a network of trains, rather than batteries, to store surplus solar and wind energy. When the system produces excess energy, it pulls a line of train cars up a hillside. When output falls, the cars roll back down the hill, their electric motors acting as generators. The system is also used on the railway between Kiruna, Sweden and Narvik, Norway, where trains full of ore generate electricity for the local power grid as they descend from the mountains to sea level.
