FACT OF THE DAY: Army ants are sometimes confused by overlapping pheromone trails and begin walking in a circle, leaving their own scent and reinforcing the behavior. The ants will generally walk in these so-called “ant mills" until they die from exhaustion. Entire ant colonies have been eliminated in this way—in 1921, naturalist William Beebe observed an ant mill 1/4 mile in circumference, and estimated that each ant was taking 2 1/2 hours to make one revolution.
