FACT OF THE DAY: When Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard released graphical operating systems in 1987, Apple sued both companies for copying the “look and feel” of the Mac OS. The courts mostly ruled against Apple, but one exception was the “trash can,” which was ruled to be copyrightable. As a result, subsequent versions of Microsoft Windows included a “recycle bin”; Norton Desktop used a “shredder”; and X Window System used a “dumpster.”
