FACT OF THE DAY: In 1835, New York dairy farmer Thomas S. Meacham gifted a 1,400-pound block of cheddar cheese to President Andrew Jackson. The cheese lingered at the White House for the next two years, until Jackson hosted an “open house” event and placed the block in the White House entrance hall, where attendees consumed it in two hours. The smell of cheese persisted in the entrance hall for some time afterward.
