FACT OF THE DAY: Russian Soyuz rockets are ignited by a wooden contraption placed into each of their engine compartments which contains a pyrotechnic charge at its end—essentially, a giant match. When the rocket releases its fuel, the “match” ignites it, and is immediately incinerated. This system is unchanged from the first rocket that launched Sputnik into orbit in 1957.
