FACT OF THE DAY: On this day in 1860, a meteor broke up while moving over the northeastern United States, producing a brilliant chain of fireballs visible from New York City to Michigan. Walt Whitman referenced the sight in Leaves of Grass, writing about "the strange huge meteor-procession dazzling and clear shooting over our heads."
