FACT OF THE DAY: After 17 years of construction, the Gotthard Base Tunnel opens today, connecting the Swiss towns of Erstfeld and Bodio. It’s the longest rail tunnel in the world, 35 miles from end-to-end, and also the deepest, as low as 1.4 miles below the surface in places. The project will cut the 4.5-hour train trip from Zurich to Milan in half.
